Now, let me introduce this traditional holidays to you guys.
Chinese Spring Festival, known as (chūn jié) in China, is the most important festival to the Chinese. Most often, however, Chinese people prefer to call it(the year). And the action "to have the Spring Festival" is called (ɡuò nián), in which (ɡuò) has the meaning of "to pass".
Chinese New Year greetings usually begin at home. On the first day of the New Year in Chinese lunar calendar, the young should first greet the elder by making bows or (kòu tóu), a Chinese way of showing respect.
When the elder has received the greetings from the young, they will give the “lucky money” (yā suì qián) to the young.
This is one of the reasons why kids like Chinese New Year very much because they can get the “lucky money”!
According to the Lunar calendar, the Spring Festival is on January 1st and lasts until the 15th (the full moon). Unlike western holidays such as Thanksgiving or Christmas, when you try to calculate it with the solar (Gregorian) calendar, the date is all over the place.
The lunar calendar is still really important in China, even though it has officially moved to the Gregorian calendar like the rest of the world. All traditional holidays and days such as the Winter Solstice are celebrated. Some people still calculate their birthdays and ages according to the lunar calendar too!
What do people do in holiday?
Eat, eat again, and then eat some more! As the old Chinese saying goes: food is everything. The tradition is to have different main courses everyday from the 1st day of the New Year to the 15th day of the New Year, from Jiao Zi (dumplings), noodles, spring rolls, sticky rice cakes, and Tang Yuan (stuffed rice balls). Besides culinary satisfaction, each food has a meaning as well: for instance, Jiao Zi looks like gold, implying a wealthy year ahead.
Chinese people love drinking. There’s a saying that there’s no manners and/or etiquette without wine. This means that you need to have wine for every ceremony, festival or important dinner.
There’s wine for engagement dinners, weddings, birthdays... and of course, the Spring Festival. With such a rich wine culture, it’s no surprise that there is a bunch of drinking games you play. However, it’s not all fun and games.
When you’re eating with someone older than you, as is the case with New Year’s dinners, you need to follow strict toasting etiquette rules. They include the order of toasts, seating, how you hold the wine glass etc. etc.
Happy Spring Festival !
Reanin machinery wish you all the best.
